This research empirically investigates how the acknowledgement of visible behaviors affects consumers’ future visibility and shapes product choices using the purchases on a social network devoted to purchases. Fixed effects and propensity matching techniques are employed to control for the endogeneity in acknowledgement and future product choices. Evidence suggests that acknowledged visibility creates a tension between short term conformity and long-term differentiation. Furthermore, there is evidence of both conformity and differentiation depending on the commenter relationship and comment polarity, indicating a nuanced relationship between feedback and future purchase decisions.
作者：Lauren Rhue 年份：未知摘要：Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter are expected to “democratize” funding by increasing the availability of capital to traditionally underrepresented groups； but there is conflicting evidence about racial disparities in success rates. This paper contributes to the information systems literature on crowdfunding by examining the racial dynamics in the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The race of subjects in project and user photos are determined with facial recognition software for 138；778 fundraising projects； and matched sample techniques are used to control for observable differences in project categories among racial groups. Even controlling for these observable differences； this study finds that projects with African-American photo subjects achieve lower success rates. African-American fundraisers also achieve significantly lower success than other groups； and this effect is larger than the effect from project photos. This study has practical implications for individuals seeking capital in these markets as well as design implications for the platforms themselves.

Although civil liberties and media freedom show a consistently positive relationship with different forms of digital access, our dynamic models that allow co-evolution of digital access, democracy and trade tie formation suggest that high mobile penetration has a more significant impact on civil liberties than Internet access does, and may also increase a country’s “susceptibility” to democratic changes in neighboring nations. We explore possible drivers of these empirical findings, discussing some social and political implications.
